Kalona is a part of the Mid-Prairie Community School District. The elementary and middle schools are located in Kalona and the high school is in Wellman, which is only 10 minutes west of Kalona.
One source of funding for the district is the Mid-Prairie Foundation. School districts in rural Iowa were undergoing severe financial stress during the mid 1980's so concerned citizens founded a non profit organization in 1987 to ensure the Mid Prairie School District would not be closed due to low funding. Projects of the foundation include endowed scholarships awarded to graduating seniors planning on attending college, creating innovative programs for students and teachers, helping athletic boosters raise funds to improve facilities and much more.
