Riverside, Iowa is located in Washington County in the Highland Community School District. Riverside has become a popular alternative to living in Iowa City. Riverside is a short, 10 minute drive south on Interstate Highway 218 from Iowa City. With a population of about 1,100 people, Riverside is a smaller community with a lot to offer.
 In March of 1985, when Riverside was looking for a theme for their annual town festival, a city council member suggested to the council that Riverside should proclaim itself to be the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, a character for the television show "Star Trek" played by William Shatner. This idea was based on science fiction books written by Gene Roddenberry, who says that Kirk was born in a small town in Eastern Iowa. The motion passed unanimously. The proclamation declaring the town the "Official Future Birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk," signed by Gene Roddenberry, is housed, along with a "Cigarstore Indian" style carved woodend statue of James T. Kirk, at the Riverside Area Community Club (RACC) along Highway 22 in downtown Riverside. A large stone and plaque in the rear of the building purports to be the home of his family, in the c. 2230's. Each year, on the last weekend of June, Riverside holds its annual festival now known as "Trek Fest." Local, out of state visitors, and travelers from around the world come to enjoy events such as demolition derby, tractor pull, rides, live music, sci-fi vendors, costume contests, and Star Trek themed events.
Highland Community School District provides education for residents of Riverside and Ainsworth. The Highland School District is home of the Highland Huskies. The Highschool and Middle School are located just outside of Riverside and educates approximately 350 students. The Mission of the Highland Community School District is to provide all students the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to fulfill their potential and become positive contributors to society. Highland Schools have high expectations for students, parents, faculty and guests.
 Riverside is now the home to the new Riverside Casino and Golf Resort, owned by Catfish Bend Casinos, Kehl Management and Iowa residents. The Riverside Casino and Golf Resort open on August 31, 2006. The resort offers a Las Vegas style casino, an 18-hole golf course, 200 room luxury hotel, and a convention center that can hold up to 1,000 people. The casino has 1,180 slot machines and approximately 45 table games. The casino donates proceeds to non-profit organizations in Washington County.
